I hesitate to do 'tutorials' as such being that I don't wish to mislead anyone into thinking that I do things the 'correct way', but for those interested this is certainly 'one way' to do something.

The painting was done in Opencanvas 4, but the same method can be used in any number of programs. All you need is a decent hard brush tool and a tablet (or a hellavalot of patience with a mouse!).
