Artist's Comments

Wee, a first for the month of July. :)

Keeping it long and loose (emphasis on long). Somewhat inspired by memories of Wing Commander: Privateer.

About an hour in OC4 w Photoshop Tweaks.

question -

why do you save your work as pngs? they tend to have way big filesizes, you can get a much better filesize even with the highest quality jpg (i saved from photoshop, anyway).

nice piece btw, the perspective on the smaller craft looks like it could be kind of wonky, but i'd have to check it...

PNGs are lossless. With JPG compression artifacting and some amount of color desaturating occurs even at the highest quality settings. Generally if I feel I might want to work more on a picture or print it I will save it as PNG. If it's something I consider a casual drawing or a dedicated web graphic I will save it as a 75% quality JPG.

I also felt that it didn't make too much of a differance saving it as a PNG until I actually started. And it does! :)

I know pngs are lossless, I used to save as them until I noticed that at the right compression the lossiness in jpgs is hardly notable (and I have a really bad upload speed too). I'd save as png for tiny web graphics (after checking .gif for size) or images that simply weren't conducive to jpg compression at all, but while painting i've found that's rarely the case... I keep my original psds, so it's not an issue there. Just when I upload for web.

Carry on, thought I'd point it out just in case -- I know way too many people who heard "pngs are better cos they are lossless", and believed it, without actually trying other formats... therefore, making it hell on dialuppers for no reason (which i'm not one of, btw). Wanted to make sure you weren't one of them :\

I hear you. Every so often I convert a bunch of my older works to jpg. I ain't made of hard drive space! xD

I keep my original psds and just have to clear out all the images I save for web all the time :D I just have a bad habit of making tweaks to the image after saving the final psd... major or minor, one of the pieces in my gallery looks VERY different in its psd form :\

My family has a network drive I just shove stuff onto though, so I guess I'm not in the same boat... that's running out of space too though :(
